Equipment

Two SLM 500 quad-laser systems

Two dedicated production channels each run a single material. One channel runs Aluminum 6061-RAM2. The other runs Inconel 625-RAM2. Keeping one material per channel avoids cross-contamination and keeps build parameters dialed in instead of reconfigured between jobs.

SLM 500 platform specifications

Published specifications for the SLM 500 platform running in each production channel.

Build envelope500 × 280 × 365 mm
Laser configurationQuad-laser, up to 4 × 700W fiber lasers
Layer thickness20–90 µm, variable
Powder handlingClosed-loop, automated sieving & recirculation
Build turnaroundExchangeable build cylinder for fast fire-to-fire changeover

Each of the four lasers scans its own section of the build plate independently, rather than one laser covering the full area alone. Manufacturer testing shows build rates up to 90% faster than a comparable twin-laser system. An overlap strategy controls the boundary zones where adjacent lasers meet, so material properties stay consistent across the full part instead of varying at the seams between laser working areas.

How it works

Metal, layer by layer

01

Powder layer

A recoater spreads a layer of fine metal powder across the build plate, just microns thick. The entire chamber runs under an inert argon atmosphere to keep oxygen away from the melt.

02

Laser fusion

Fiber lasers trace the layer's geometry, melting powder into solid metal exactly where the design calls for it.

03

Repeat

The build plate drops a fraction of a millimeter and the next layer begins. This repeats thousands of times per part.

04

Cool & remove

Once the build finishes, parts cool inside an inert atmosphere before being separated from the plate.

05

Inspect

Parts are checked against spec before they move on to any finishing or testing they still need.
